During World War II, the young women of America lined up at factories and arsenals to fill the jobs left vacant by the men who went off to fight. Each woman involved in the production of military hardware became known as a WOW (Woman Ordnance Worker). These women wore red bandanas with white markings of the "shell and flame" not only for safety reasons but from a strong sense of pride in their contributions to the war effort.
