This 1-1/4" Brass Lantern Keychain with Clear Glass Globe is a classic miniature reproduction of early 1800's lanterns which were an often portable source of lighting, typically featuring a protective enclosure for the light source – historically usually a candle, or a wick in oil – to make it easier to carry and hang up, and make it more reliable outdoors or in drafty interiors.
Lanterns were also traditionally used for railroad signaling, as torches, or as general light-sources outdoors. The lantern enclosure was primarily used to prevent a burning candle or wick being extinguished from wind, rain or other causes.
