Houqua (Wu Bingjian, 1769–1843) was one of the primary Chinese merchants involved in trading with Americans and even invested in U.S. railroads through business partners in Boston. He often gave his portrait to foreign business associates, and copies of his likeness were made by Chinese artists in Canton.This portrait was owned by Benjamin Chew Wilcocks. It is in the style of George Chinnery, a British artist living in Macao who painted Hong merchants like Houqua and Mouqua in Western-style poses.
