Like many other vessels built at the end of the 19th Century, Cruiser OLYMPIA was designed to carry sails. Though it is often believed that the rig was a form of auxiliary propulsion, the rig in reality was designed as a means of steadying the vessel in rough weather. Later vessels relied on deeper hulls and bilge keels for stability.
During Cruiser OLYMPIA's service life, her officers were supplied with stationary for writing correspondence. In the 1890s, the stationary featured embossed letterheads. The elaborately decorated letterheads were designed to reflect OLYMPIA's prestige as a capital ship of the U.S Navy.
