The USS Nautilus (SSN-571) was the world’s first operational nuclear-powered submarine, launched in 1954. It revolutionized naval warfare with its nearly unlimited range and ability to stay submerged for extended periods. In 1958, Nautilus made history as the first vessel to complete a submerged transit of the North Pole. Serving for over 25 years, it became a key asset during the Cold War. Decommissioned in 1980, it is now a National Historic Landmark and museum ship in Groton, Connecticut, celebrating its pioneering role in naval innovation.
