Like many other vessels built at the end of the 19th Century, Cruiser OLYMPIA was designed to carry sails. Though it is often believed that the rig was a form of auxiliary propulsion, the rig, in reality, was designed as a means of steadying the vessel in rough weather. Later, vessels relied on deeper hulls and bilge keels for stability.
