Named for the city of Newark, NJ, USS NEWARK (C-1) was one of the new steel cruisers built for the U.S. Navy in Philadelphia. NEWARK's keel was laid on June 12, 1888, at William Cramp & Sons shipyard along Delaware Avenue and Cumberland Street. She was launched on March 19, 1890, commissioned on February 2, 1891, and served as a naval warship until June 16, 1912. After her active service, she served as a hospital ship for the Public Health Service and the Navy until 1926.
